Gnome News – Week of 10/6

October already?  Geez.  Probably after next week I’ll go back to writing on here less sporadically.  What have I been up to I pretend you ask?  Here’s a few highlights from last week.

What I Watched Recently:  Gravity

Holy crap you guys.  I can’t really say anything new about this film that hasn’t already been said.  I was actually nervous about seeing this film because I get such anxiety from watching that trailer.  My dad really wanted to see it so I obliged. It was directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) so I was hoping for a long scene done in one shot.  I was not disappointed.  The first 17 minutes is one continuous shot and beautiful.  The whole film is gorgeous and if it doesn’t win for best cinematography I will eat my own foot.  Also Sandra Bullock pulls out a hell of a performance.  There’s a couple scenes where she has to talk to herself so that the audience is aware of what’s going on in her mind and she pulls them off convincingly.  I believe the original choice for the lead was Angelina Jolie and I think they went with the right choice in choosing Bullock.  Go see it.  Now.

What I’m Looking Forward To:  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Gravity was only a 90 minute film, but there was approximately 15 minutes of trailer.  They were all easily forgettable (there’s one with Morgan Freeman and a bunch of other old actors essentially remaking The Hangover, who asked for that?).  This one caught me by surprise.  It’s Ben Stiller in a movie that ISN’T about things in a museum coming to life.  We’ve seen the plot before.  An introverted protagonist that daydreams about saying/doing the right thing in various missed opportunities.  The visual style seems ripped out of something Gondry would do and some of the compositions look like something from a Wes Anderson film.  I just looked at Rotten Tomatoes and apparently it’s only at a 29% (with 7 reviews).  Either they’re wrong or I’m wrong and I’m just a sucker for anything attached to Of Monsters and Men as of late.  Okay maybe it’s the latter.

Where I Drank Recently:  16 Bit Bar+Arcade

Wait.  So there’s a place you can go where you play video games AND drink? AND no one points and calls you a nerd?  Granted most of the people that would go here ARE nerds (or hipsters, it IS by Dirty Franks after all).  This place just opened up recently downtown Columbus.  They have about 40 or so arcade cabinets ranging from Frogger to Rampage. Oh, and they’re all free to play.  Granted the beer is a little marked up, but it’s comparable to any bars in the Arena District.  I went there Friday night and totally scored…in Galaga.  I don’t know how to talk to women.

What I’m Currently Listening To:  The Naked and Famous – In Rolling Waves

The Naked and Famous just released this album and I can’t stop listening to it.  I’m a sucker for bands with singers of both genders (see – Of Monsters and Men).  It’s a more “mature” album then Passive Me, Aggressive You.  By that I mean there’s less heavy hitting songs like “Girls Like You,” or “Punching in a Dream,” but I’ve been listening to songs off this album every day for the past couple of weeks so obviously it works.

What I’m Currently Watching:  Ghost Ghirls

For having the most racist commenters on any site ever, Yahoo makes up for it with some amazing web content.  Burning Love is a must watch.  It’s a parody of The Bachelor and stars Ken Marino (season 1) and June Diane Raphael (season 2).  You’ll frequently see alumni from The State and Children’s Hospital make appearance.  Some of these comedy celebs also make an appearance on my latest addiction, Ghost Ghirls.  Amanda Lund and Maria Blasucci star as two young ghost hunters.  That’s all that needs to be said really.  It’s absurd and each episode is relatively short so get into it!

 What I’m Currently Writing:  Phoenix

The final deadline for BlueCat isn’t until next month, so I’m taking a hiatus from writing Crossing the Transversal.  Who knew writing a sci-fi chick flick where half the story takes place in a dream could be so difficult?  Well Scriptapalooza’s television script deadline is this month so I’ve been hard at work writing, Phoenix.  I don’t really know how to describe this one.  It’s science fiction (of course).  The way I’ve described it to friends is that it’s a cop procedural meets The Fly meets The Prestige meets Multiplicity.  I’ll be wrapping this script up by next week so next Monday I’ll post a small excerpt from it.

Have a splendid week and check back here Friday for another Television Nostalgia Hour!
